Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II took the franchise in a bold new direction when it launched in 2009, abandoning traditional base building in favor of a squad-focused tactical experience that emphasized RPG elements and hero development. Developed by Relic Entertainment, the game follows Force Commander Aramus and his elite strike force of Blood Ravens as they defend the recruiting worlds of Sub-sector Aurelia against Ork invasions, Eldar machinations, and the emerging Tyranid threat.
The gameplay represents a dramatic departure from its predecessor, focusing on commanding small groups of specialized units rather than managing large armies. Players control up to four squads, each led by a unique hero character who gains experience, levels up, and can be equipped with powerful wargear found during missions. This loot system, reminiscent of action RPGs like Diablo, creates a compelling gameplay loop where players constantly seek better equipment to enhance their squads' effectiveness.
The campaign can be played cooperatively with a friend, adding a social dimension to the tactical gameplay. Mission selection is non-linear, allowing players to choose which threats to address while managing the defense ratings of various worlds. Failing to protect a planet results in lasting consequences, raising the stakes of every strategic decision. The expansion packs Chaos Rising and Retribution continued the story while adding new factions and standalone campaigns.
Dawn of War II's multiplayer modes offered both competitive versus matches and the cooperative survival mode Last Stand, where three players control individual heroes against waves of enemies. While the dramatic shift in gameplay style divided fans of the original, Dawn of War II carved out its own identity as a deeply tactical experience that rewards careful positioning, ability timing, and squad composition. Its intimate scale provides a different but equally valid interpretation of Warhammer 40,000 warfare.

Anders als der Vorgänger, aber auf seine Art gut. Die RPG-Elemente sind interessant. Chaos Rising ist das Highlight.
