Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade is an expansion developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. Released in 2006, it introduced a revolutionary campaign system. Instead of a linear story, the game offered a Risk-like campaign map of the planet Kronus where seven factions fought for dominance.
Tau and Necrons were introduced as new playable factions with completely new gameplay mechanics. The Tau relied on superior firepower and mobility with battlesuits and drones, enabling a very technological warfare style. The Necrons were slow but nearly indestructible with the ability to resurrect fallen warriors.
The persistent campaign system rewarded successful conquests with honor guard units and war gear that strengthened the commander. Defense was as important as offense since enemy factions could strike at any time. Certain provinces like strongholds offered additional bonuses after conquest.
Dark Crusade is considered by many fans to be the best Dawn of War expansion. The combination of strategic depth on the campaign map and tactical action in real-time battles created an addictive gameplay experience with enormous replayability.
