Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War revolutionized the real-time strategy genre when it launched in 2004, becoming one of the most acclaimed RTS games ever made. Developed by Relic Entertainment, the game introduced players to the brutal conflicts of the 41st millennium through an innovative approach to resource management and base building that emphasized constant warfare over turtling strategies. The campaign follows the Blood Ravens Space Marine chapter as they battle the Orks on the planet Tartarus, uncovering a sinister Chaos plot in the process.

The gameplay distinguished itself from contemporaries by requiring players to capture and hold strategic points across the map to generate resources, ensuring that battles remained dynamic and aggressive throughout each match. The morale system added another layer of tactical depth, as units could be broken and routed by sustained fire or devastating attacks, making psychological warfare as important as raw firepower. Squad-based infantry could be reinforced on the battlefield and equipped with various heavy weapons, allowing for flexible tactical responses.

Dawn of War's multiplayer component became legendary in the RTS community, offering intense competitive matches with four distinct factions: Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar. Each faction played radically differently, from the elite but expensive Space Marines to the overwhelming green tide of the Orks. The game spawned three expansions - Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm - each adding new factions including the Imperial Guard, Tau, Necrons, Sisters of Battle, and Dark Eldar.

The legacy of Dawn of War cannot be overstated in both gaming and Warhammer history. It introduced countless players to the Warhammer 40,000 universe and set the standard for how the franchise should be adapted to video games. The combination of accessible yet deep gameplay, faithful representation of the source material, and outstanding production values made it an instant classic that remains enjoyable to this day, nearly two decades after its release.

Das RTS, das mich zum Warhammer-Fan gemacht hat. Grafik ist natürlich veraltet, aber Gameplay ist zeitlos.
