Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault is an expansion developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. Released in 2005, it introduced the Imperial Guard as a playable faction. The campaign takes place on the ice planet Lorn V, where various factions fight for control of a crashed Emperor-class Titan.

The Imperial Guard brought a completely new playstyle to Dawn of War. Unlike the robust Space Marines, they relied on mass and firepower. Infantry could take cover in trenches while heavy tanks like the Leman Russ and mighty Basilisk artillery delivered devastating firepower. Commissars motivated troops and could execute deserters to restore morale.

The campaign offered one of the best stories in the entire Dawn of War series, with complex characters and difficult choices. Players experienced the conflict from various perspectives and saw how different factions clashed. The final battle for the Titan was an epic spectacle.

Winter Assault significantly improved multiplayer and introduced new maps and balance adjustments. The expansion cemented Dawn of War's reputation as the leading Warhammer RTS and is considered one of the best expansions in the series.
