Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault was the first expansion to Dawn of War, adding the Imperial Guard as a playable faction and introducing the Order/Disorder campaign structure. The human soldiers of the Guard played completely differently from the superhuman Space Marines, emphasizing numbers and artillery.

The dual campaign allowed players to experience the conflict over a Titan from both sides, with Order (Imperial Guard and Eldar) facing Disorder (Orks and Chaos). The branching missions created narrative variety. The winter setting provided atmospheric visual changes.

The Imperial Guard required completely different tactics from the base game factions, massing infantry and supporting with heavy weapons rather than relying on elite units. The faction's unique mechanics included morale-based abilities and commander units.

Winter Assault successfully expanded Dawn of War while introducing the Guard's distinctive mass-warfare approach. The campaign structure innovations would continue in subsequent expansions.
