Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide is a cooperative first-person action game developed and published by Fatshark. Released in October 2015, it emerged as Warhammer's answer to Left 4 Dead and proved to be a brilliant combination. The game puts four players into the roles of five heroes fighting against Skaven hordes in Ubersreik during the End Times. The furry rat monsters stream through the streets in masses, and only cooperation can ensure survival.

The combat system is surprisingly deep and satisfying. Each of the five heroes has their own playstyle: the Imperial Soldier Markus Kruber, the Dwarf Ranger Bardin Goreksson, the Fire Mage Sienna Fuegonasus, the Witch Hunter Victor Saltzpyre, and the Wood Elf Kerillian. Melee combat is central and requires precise timing for blocks and strikes.

The missions lead through detailed environments, from burning streets to plague-infested sewers. The AI Director varies enemy waves and events so that no two playthroughs are identical. Special enemies like the Rat Ogre or the Gutter Runner create chaotic moments that can only be overcome through teamwork.

Vermintide earned praise for its atmosphere, gameplay, and replay value. The loot system and various difficulty levels provided long-term motivation. It proved that Warhammer Fantasy could work outside of strategy games and laid the foundation for a successful series.
