Blood Bowl (2009) is a turn-based and real-time strategy game developed by Cyanide Studio that revitalized the classic Games Workshop franchise. The game adapts the beloved tabletop game where fantasy races play a violent, no-rules version of American football. Players can choose between faithful turn-based rules or an innovative real-time mode that brings new urgency to the brutal sport.

The turn-based mode recreates the tabletop experience with meticulous accuracy, using dice rolls and probability calculations for every action. Players position their athletes on a pitch, attempting to advance the ball while dealing with opponent interference through blocks, tackles, and outright violence. The real-time mode transforms matches into fast-paced chaos where quick thinking replaces careful calculation.

Eight playable races offer distinct tactical approaches, from the balanced Humans to the hard-hitting Orcs and fragile but agile Skaven. Campaign mode features story-driven leagues where coaches develop their teams over seasons, gaining fans and prestige while managing player injuries and deaths. Online multiplayer enables competition against human opponents worldwide.

Blood Bowl (2009) marked the beginning of Cyanide Studio's long relationship with the franchise, establishing standards for future adaptations. The game successfully bridges the gap between tabletop purists and video game fans, offering both authentic and accessible ways to experience the mayhem of fantasy football.
